VHF DFing Hunts
From W&DARS
A fox hunt in this context does not involve any cruelty to animals. It involves a vehicular search using DFing Antennas for one of the club members. A practical evening of real DFing in an urban setting. The fox will be transmitting in the 2m band!
If you wish to enter a team please download the rules
The evening begins at our normal club meeting place, where we will register anyone competing from 7:30pm. The "fox" will transmit for 30 seconds every 10 minutes starting at 8pm. There are no prizes although we will keep a score for the first person to find the fox, and also the person who drives the shortest distance to find the fox. Just a bit of fun!
The evening ends at the Princess of Wales Public House, where we will share stories of what happened. Vistors from other clubs and non-members are welcome to enter a team.
Friday 30th May 2008
The warm dry evening of Friday 30th May saw the first of the current series of Urban DF Hunts. Jim G4WYJ and Barbara M3WYJ were the “Fox Team”, and they chose to secret themselves in Caesars Walk a cul-de-sac adjacent to The Wilson Hospital just off the cricket green in Mitcham. The first call was made on time at 20.00 using the club call G3WIM/M, five “teams” were listening in the Church car park at Martin Way, they took their first bear- ings and were off. Calls were made every 10 minutes, using 50 Watts then reducing to 5 Watts.
The first team to find the Fox was George G3DWW and Andrew G4ADM ay 21.05, the next was Peter M0PDJ at 21.47. There were two sections in the challenge, first, and shortest distance travelled, George and Andrew won both of these, having travelled 7 miles, Peter travelled 13 miles. The final transmission was made at 21.50, the Fox closed down at 22.00 and joined the “Hounds” at The Princess of Wales for a debrief and some much needed refreshment.
